Vlad glanced at Minxie again but she was staring straight ahead.

“Ah, yes – here’s a note,” said Vlad, handing it to the teacher.

“Your grandfather has very, um, unusual spelling, doesn’t he?” Miss Lemondrop said, once she had read it.

Vlad nodded. “He still finds writing in English quite tricky.”

“Of course,” said Miss Lemondrop kindly. “I wouldn’t have a clue how to write a note in Transylvanian.” She laughed. “Now, as I was saying, today we are learning about the life cycle of a frog. Who knows what a baby frog looks like?”

Boz shouted out, “Small and green and slimy. Like snot!”

The class giggled.

Miss Lemondrop’s expression darkened but her voice remained calm. “No calling out, please, Boswell.”

“Don’t be silly, Boz,” said Minxie. “Everyone knows a baby frog is a tadpole. And they’re not green and slimy,” she added. “They’re black and wriggly.”

“Like your boyfriend in his stupid cape,” said Boz, under his breath.

Miss Lemondrop didn’t hear what Boz said but Vlad did. He wished he knew how to stop Boz from being so mean.

“Well done, Minxie,” the teacher said. “I’ve brought some real tadpoles to show you. Look.” She reached down behind her and lifted a small fish tank on to her desk. It was full of water and green pondweed.

“Line up at the front,” said the teacher. “Quietly and sensibly!” she added, as everyone rushed to be first.

“Cool!” said Ravi. “They really ARE black and wriggly.”
